Inheritance

He watched in fascination as his dad took out the packet, opened it, emptied the contents in his left palm, threw away the packet and started rolling the contents in his left palm to a small ball. He ran to the spot where his dad threw the packet and read the title loud just as his dad deposited it in the left corner of his mouth. “Hans”. “What is this, dad? Can I taste it? Does it taste bitter or sweet?” His dad shooed him away.

It was after a few years when he picked up that habit. It all began in his college days, where smoking and hans, etc were considered macho and cool. And that dreaded habit hopped on to him. His dad did find out eventually and gave him a sound thrashing. But things didnt change and he continued with his hans and cigarettes and so did his dad. Things went on smoothly for a while.

His dad died. He was diagnosed with a very advanced case of cancer. Oral cancer. After he had finished all the rites, he came home mentally weak. He decided to chuck hans and smoking after his doctor told him that his dad had requested him to do so. He didnt want to die of cancer. He somehow managed to get his mind off cigarettes and hans, but eventually it got the better of him.

He went to the local store and bought a packet. He opened it, emptied the contents in his left palm, threw away the packet and started rolling the contents in his left palm to a small ball. “What is this, dad? Can I taste it? Does it taste bitter or sweet?” He remembered his own past as he shooed his son away. He threw away the hans ball in disgust. “Never again”, he told himself
